India’s 400 Airport Push By 2047 Lifts BRICS Global South Ambitions
India’s aviation sector is undergoing a monumental transformation with plans to expand its airport count from 160 to over 400 by 2047. This initiative, unveiled at Wings India 2026, aims to position the country as a key aviation hub for the Global South. Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the democratization of air travel, stating, "In India, air travel is no longer exclusive; it’s becoming inclusive."
The expansion aligns with BRICS' broader strategy to enhance regional connectivity and economic sovereignty. Sustainable aviation fuel production is a cornerstone of the plan, reflecting India’s commitment to greener air transport across developing economies. The government’s accelerated infrastructure push since 2014—when only 70 airports were operational—highlights its ambition to redefine regional mobility.
